The Go-Getters is our space to feature all the young talents out there, who are scaling the mountains to reach greater heights. Every month, we introduce you to two talented artists, who are fast making their marks in their chosen art.
Suma Varma is a living example of how determination can give wings to dreams, however challenging the conditions around may be. A bout of polio at the age of 1.5 years had paralyzed Suma in the right hand and waist down. But this physical disability did not dissuade her undying spirit. She never wanted to figure on the list of people who failed in life. This resolve was what led her to graduate in Commerce and pursue her passion in art. Suma trained and excelled in various fields of art such as music, painting and crafts. With a differently abled body that proved to be a challenge at times, Suma was constantly in search of new avenues to express her creativity.
Suma’s source of inspiration was the books that she surrounded herself with. It was these very books that led her towards the mesmerizing world of colors and art. The confidence that these books gave her led Suma to start painting. She would paint on whatever materials she could lay her hands on – canvas, fabric and glass. She also successfully tried her hand at jewelry making and crochet work. Suma underwent training in Carnatic music and has been teaching students for the past 25 years.
Suma feels that her knowledge is never complete and is always eager to learn more. She keeps herself updated with the latest trends in her interest areas with the help of the internet. Her family has always supported her in all her endeavors and has been the key to her success in life. She currently stays in Edappally with her mother Shantha Kumari who along with Suma’s sister and brother-in-law has been a huge source of encouragement to her. Suma recently held and exhibition of her works aptly titled ‘Aparajitha’ meaning undefeated that has received a lot of positive response and support.
Team Salabhanjika wishes Suma all the very best for her future.
